Mihály Csokonai Vitéz wrote his most comical piece, when for him all was lost; this coarse, but enchanting burlesque is the triumph of elation over sadness and hopelessness. Besides the fact that it is so modern, that it is probably closer to us than anything that Hungarian literature could provide us with in the next century. This restless modernity may come from that fine, lyrical self-irony, with which the poet tried to mix the comedy of an old lady, who is longing for love. The Widow Karnyó and the two Rascals is Csokonai’s best burlesque. Well suited to the genre of burlesque, all characters of the piece are foolish, grotesque figures. Even if the cheated Mrs. Karnyó’s fate moves us to pity, the grotesque suicidal scene, the arrival of the husband, who is believed to be dead, the mass death and the appearance of the fairy that wakes dead people are all very burlesque-like. All these cannot be compensated with those few anti-French, “patriotic” outbursts that Csokonai had to force into the end of the piece for the sake of the royalty present at the premiere. The Hungarian State Opera House hosts the third of János Vajda’s operas (Mario and the Magician /1988/, Leonce and Lena /1999/), which considers acquainting the audiences with current contemporary pieces, a very respectful task for more than a hundred years.
